Planning
for the Southern Regional Public Hearing was held in
Community Health Cell, Bangalore
on 5th
June 2004
Andhra
Pradesh (AP)
JSA (AP) has taken the responsibility of doing the
groundwork for the NHRC Public Hearing in Andhra Pradesh.
Collection of case studies is underway in Chegunta and
other mandals of AP. Dr. Geyanand and team have taken the
task of collecting cases of denial of healthcare from
other regions in the state. A study on Sub-Centres is
being conducted in Medak district. Dr. Prakash Vinjamuri
and others from JSA (AP)
are also involved in collecting case studies.
Karnataka
JSA Karnataka or Jana Arogya Andolana (JAA) members
met in Bangalore
in
late June to decide on the strategy to be adopted for the
Public Hearing. Bangalore urban
unit of JSA subsequently met in CHC on 29th
June. Follow-up of the cases decided is being taken up and
5 cases are expected to be presented by this month-end. A
meeting in the Koramangala Slum took place on 2nd
July as a part of the efforts to spread the message about
JSA and to encourage people to share their experience of
denial of healthcare with the NHRC. A Public Hearing is
scheduled to be held in Koramangala Slum on August 19th.
Visits to Bangalore City Corporation run Maternity
Hospitals with members of the Board of Visitors was
organised. Interaction with the patients, staff and the
community provided valuable insights and feedback into the
functioning of the hospitals. Dr. Paresh and Chander
conducted training for NGO staff on conducting case
studies. Meetings were held in Hospet and Bellary
districts
on 19th and 20th.
Kerala
The JSA Working group met on 27th June 2004
to
discuss the regional Public Hearing to be held in Chennai.
It was decided that a meeting of all the JSA constituents
would be convened in august to strengthen JSA and to
compile cases. Currently cases relating to health are
being complied in Plachimada, Eloor Industrial belt and
Endosulfan related cases in Palakkad.
Tamil
Nadu
The
core committee of Tamil Nadu JSA met on 10th
June to plan the logistics and action plan for the NHRC
Public Hearing. Many groups including TNVHA, TNSF, AID
India, AIDWA, TNHDF and others are involved in compiling
cases of denial of health care. Meetings were also held in
Hosur, Madurai, Pudukottai, Trichy and Dharmapuri, in
which CHC team members participated.
A
final planning meeting was held on 16th August in Chennai.
