NHRC - JSA Western Region Public HearingDate: 29 July 2004 Venue: Regional Science Centre, Bhopal
The Western Region Public Hearing was held on 29th July 2004 at the Regional Science Centre in Bhopal. It was inaugurated by Justice Shri Y. Bhaskar Rao from NHRC. Cases from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa were presented in this public hearing. During the day-long public hearing, selected cases or instances, wherein individuals or groups have suffered denial of right to health care, and have not received mandated health care from a public health facility, were presented before a panel consisting of NHRC and state level public health officials.
During the public hearing individuals who suffered denial of health care for various ailments gave testimonies which included denial of care for snake bite with fatal consequences, denial to conduct delivery, discrimination against HIV patients, denial of health care to children resulting in death, nexus of government doctors with private sector leading to unethical practices etc. Framework of the public hearingThis hearing was hosted by NHRC in partnership with western region JSA constituents and was inaugurated by Justice Shri Y. Bhaskar Rao NHRC. Dr.N.H.Antia , Chairperson, Health Committee NHRC. Top officials from the respective state Human Rights Commission also attended this programme.

The NHRC proposes to take up certain serious instances of denial of health care and redress them under the procedure laid down in the protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 for complaints of Human Rights Violation. Based on these hearings, the NHRC has also proposed to send detailed recommendations to Union and State Governments on systemic issues related to denial of Health Care. |
